Visiting our libraries
What are the library staffed/self-service opening hours?
Who can visit the library during self-service hours?
The Murray Library is open 24/7 with both staffed and self-service opening during core teaching weeks. At. Peter's Library is open until 12 midnight.
All University of Sunderland staff and students may use the library during self-service periods. Staff and students may be accompanied by their children until 21:00
You must present your campus card or library card and photographic ID, in order to enter the library. This is in the interest of security.
Library services during self-service opening hours
During self-service periods you may continue to use the majority of library services including IT facilities, access the collections and issue, renew and return books.
Vending machines selling drinks and snacks are available in the foyer of The Murray Library and on the lower floor of the Prospect Building at St Peter's. In The Murray Library we are happy for you to enjoy refreshments in the cafe area and Wireless Lounge and in the cafe area and social leaning space at St.Peter's Library.
Visiting the library with children
We make every effort to support your studies by making our services accessible and fully understand that there may be times when you need to bring your children into our libraries.
Accompanied children are able to visit the library between the hours of 8:30 and 21:00
Children remain the responsibility of the parent or carer and must be constantly supervised everywhere in our libraries. This is to ensure a safe and secure environment for all of our customers and to maintain an environment conducive to study.
Using mobile phones in the library
Silent study
There are silent study areas in both of our libraries:
- in The Murray Library - on the Lower Ground and Upper Floors
- in St Peter's Library - in the Catherine Cookson Reading Room
Eating and drinking
We are happy for you to enjoy refreshments in the library but would appreciate you helping us maintain a pleasant environment by not disturbing other customers with noisy or strong smelling food, clearing away after yourselves, using the recycling facilities and letting us know as soon as possible if any accidental spillages occur so that we can arrange to have the area cleaned.
