University of Sunderland Special Collections

The University of Sunderland Special Collections Service is located on Level 3 of The Murray Library and is part of University Library Services with responsibility for the University's collection of archives.  At the moment our main basis is the NEEMARC collection which is the papers of three key institutions of the coal industry - the North East Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers, the Durham Miners Association (formerly National Union of Mineworkers, Durham Area) and the Durham Colliery Overmen, Deputies and Shotfirers Union.  Special Collections also contains The Kate Adie Collection

We support the vision and values of the University of Sunderland Library Services and our responsibility is to ensure our unique collections are used for research, teaching and enrichment of the university environment, and to stimulate new research by preserving, developing, and promoting our collections. We do this in a number of ways by:

  • Providing access to original and rare material for teaching and research
  • Engaging in outreach and cultural activities.
  • Offering volunteer opportunities.
