Skills for Learning Events

University Library Services run a variety of skills support events to help you complete your assignments and to support your research.

Assignment Week Skills Drop-ins

No appointment needed. Just stop by the Skills drop-in at either St. Peter's or the Murray Library and library staff will do our best to help you with your assignment skills questions.

Drop-in any time between 10am-3pm on the dates below. Each day we'll either be at the Murray Library or St. Peter's Library.

Sign up below for our workshops. If you're working on your dissertation this semster, then some workshops will be particularly relevant for you, but all students are welcome.

Introduction to using the library off campus (webinar for distance learners)

When: Tuesday 28th Feb 09:30am - 10:30am (UK time) 
Where: Online - instructions will be sent whenyou register
Workshop description:

We'll look at how you can find relevant information for your assignments including e-books, full text journal articles, newspaper articles, and more. We'llconsider the best tools to use to search for sources and what you can do if the information you need is not available online. You'll have an opportunity to ask questions too.

Microsoft Word for Long Documents

When: Tuesday 28th Feb 2:30pm
Where: InfoSkills Room, The Murray Library
Workshop description:

Don't let page numbers get the best of you. Save yourself time and hassle by learning how to set your Word Document up from the beginning. In this workshop we'll cover the following topics

  • Setting up a logical effective structure with outlines and templates
  • Automatically generating a table of contents, table of figures and other document elements
  • Adding footnotes, images, tables, and other graphics
  • Numbering chapters, sections, and pages
  • Adding headers and footers
  • Using different page numbering styles for different sections.

Easy referencing with Zotero

When: Wednesday 1st March
Where: Infoskills Room, The Murray Library
Workshop description:

Referencing doesn't have to be a nightmare. Zotero is a free tool that allows you to collect your references easily while online. It integrates with Microsoft Word so you can easily create your reference list.
Come along to our Zotero workshop and see whether it could save you time.

Find the sources you need: advanced Discover

When: Thursday 2nd March
Where: Infoskills Room, The Murray Library
Workshop description:

You'll definitely need to include a variety of sources in your assignments. Come and find out how to search Discover for journal articles on your subject. We'll look at some of Discover's advanced features and discuss how you can build a specific search.
