Embedding Skills For Learning

Embedding skills for learning into your teaching

  • University Library Services -  Skills For Learning Strategy
The Skills for Learning Strategy + Appendices outlines how we can embed information skills support into teaching, learning and research activity.
  • Skills For Learning sessions
Library staff are experienced in working with academic staff to design and deliver customised information literacy support. Please contact your Subject Librarian if you would like to arrange student and staff induction or customised skills for learning support.
  • Online skills support
We provide a wide range of online skills support. We are happy to work with you to integrate library resources and information skills into your web-based learning materials and can arrange the digitisation of excerpts where copyright allows.  The Help area of our webpages provides links to skills for learning materials, including tutorials, and to University Library Services guides.

Supporting bibliographical referencing skills using 'Cite them Right'

'Cite them Right'  is an excellent guide to the Harvard and British Standard systems of bibliographical referencing and to avoiding plagiarism.  It replaces the Guide to the Harvard Style of Referencing, that was formerly produced by University Library Services.

An e-version of 'Cite them Right' is available by logging into https://my.sunderland.ac.uk with your User ID and Password then clicking on 'Me' and 'Library Resources.'  It's also available in Popular Links at the foot of all of our web pages. You can add Cite them Right to VISTA modules. Our Cite them right explains how to retrieve the guide from the VISTA repository and embed it into your module.  For further help with this please contact Learning Development Services (Tel: 0191 515 3196).

Print copies of 'Cite them Right' are available to borrow in the library and can also be purchased from bookshops.  (Pears, R. and Shields, G. (2008) Cite them right : the essential guide to referencing and plagiarism. Newcastle upon Tyne: Pear Tree Books).
