Support for Staff

Each School is assigned a professionally trained and qualified librarian, who will partner with you to support your teaching, learning, and research.

Our collections consist of printed and electronic resources that support the University's learning, teaching, and research activities. We work with you to ensure materials are available in a variety of formats and loan periods. We also manage SURE, our institutional research repository, and Special Collections, containing archives and materials relating to Sunderland and the North East.

Our Library Reading Lists system enhances the management and accessibility of reading materials. They are user-friendly, allowing you to manage your lists in one location. This saves time and avoids duplication across platforms like Canvas and module guides.

We offer a digitisation service under the terms of the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) Higher Education Licence. We can help you explore the benefits of adding digitised extracts to Library Reading Lists and how to make digitisation requests.

We have an established and University-endorsed study skills strategy, taking a wide view of skills, supporting a research-active curriculum, graduate employability, and digital literacy. Information literacy is central to study skills, including academic skills such as critical thinking and academic writing.

We offer a range of support to researchers, including support with systematic searching, copyright, and reference management.

Open research is fast becoming a key element of research practices. In addition to a changing academic publishing environment, it is important to make sure that you understand and navigate these changes well. Practising open research and publishing open access are great ways to make your research more visible and accessible.

We offer a Research Buddy scheme to help you develop your research skills, can advise you about the PhD process, and help you to embed open research practices from the start of your research process.

Our spaces are open to current University of Sunderland staff, offering a range of study spaces and print collections.

Whilst the main floor study areas are available on a first-come, first-served basis, our private rooms, booths, and pods are only available to students.

All staff can borrow up to 25 items at a time and can access our online collections using their University user ID and password.

You can apply for access to eresources, as licenses permit, and can view module readings via Library Reading Lists.

We are happy to run induction webinars and offer one-to-one support, as well as provide induction resources for students studying at a transnational partner. If you are a member of staff at a partner centre, you are free to link to our material on your virtual learning environments or within your teaching materials.
