English language support

Develop your English language skills and achieve in your main programme of study. Take an English language class to develop your spoken and written academic English.

Current students of the University of Sunderland whose first language is not English can choose from a range of 5 week courses at both Introduction and Developing level in a range of different skills and topics or register for one to one support sessions for support and advice.

Registration for EAP courses in 2024/25 is now open.

Semester one (2024/25)

We're offering five-week courses designed to help you develop your English language and academic skills and support you in your main course of study. In semester one, our teaching is divided into two blocks: Block A and Block B.

In Block A, EAP teaching begins week commencing 7 October and EBS teaching week commencing 21 October. In Block B, EAP classes will begin week commencing 25 November and EBS week commencing 2 December. Each course requires you to attend two hours per week, plus an additional 30 minutes is available for tutorials.

How do the teaching blocks work and how many five-week courses can I apply for?

You're allowed to choose one or two courses per block, or a total of four courses per semester. For instance, from the catalogue of existing courses, a student can decide to enrol on 'Developing Academic Writing' and 'Developing Academic Reading' in Block A, then study 'Developing Academic Listening' and 'Developing Academic Speaking' in Block B.

Please note, because we understand each student may have different needs and levels of English, there's no prescribed package of courses you must take. For courses with multiple groups, you must sign up for ONE group only based on your preferences and academic timetable. If you complete a course in Block A, you must not choose the same course in Block B.

Please note, registration for each block closes at the end of the second week of teaching. If you need support or are unsure which courses to select, use our Live Chat, and a member of the EAP team will get in touch to answer your questions.

Still unsure? Come and talk to us at one of our drop-in sessions. You can find us at Wearside View 108 (Language Centre) at the Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter's on 18 and 25 September, and 2 and 9 October from 1-3pm.

You can also book a one-to-one session for advice and support with your academic English.
