Digitisation and copyright

Digitising key resources ensures access to high demand items for your students. The digitisation service can provide digital copies of a range of resources. The digitised items are accessible online via Library Reading Lists.

Copyright Guide

The Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) Higher Education Licence enables us to digitise materials for teaching purposes. There are limitations around what and how much information may be digitised.

Copyright for Library resources

Please remember that you must not scan and upload copyrighted material to Library reading lists yourself. This would be a copyright infringement and could result in legal action against the person who made the scan, the University, or both. We have produced a Copyright for Library Resources Guide to signpost information to assist you with the lawful use of copyrighted library resources. Copyright is a complex subject and the information contained in the guide is for general information only.

The guide provides a basic explanation of copyright law, what it is, who it applies to, and how long it lasts.  It provides an overview of how copyright licences work in an educational setting, details of the licences we hold here at the University of Sunderland, and what those licences allow us to do in terms of reusing copyrighted materials.

Digitisation for Library Reading Lists

We offer a reading list digitised extract service under the terms of the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) Higher Education Licence. Our guide highlights the benefits digitised extracts on Library Reading Lists offer and explains how to make digitisation requests. Requests for digitisation of copyrighted material must be made via Library Reading Lists to comply with the CLA Higher Educaton Licence. Find out more about digitisation and how to request by reading the Library Digitisation Guide. Your Academic Liaison Librarian can provide advice about the application process for digitising key extracts.
